This meeting will be a community conversation about the transformation from rural to suburban that occurred in our area.  What were your experiences?  Did your family move into a brand new subdivision house?  Did you grow up on a truck farm?  Are there houses or a business where your family once grew tomatoes?  What were your experiences with modern conveniences and new technology over the decades?  How did all of the changes impact your family’s daily life?
 It’s easy to “Zoom,” join in and share your story and hear the stories of others!  Some of the memories and information may be shared in an upcoming issue of the SCHS Newsletter.

Sappington-Concord Historical Society Invites Community to Celebrate Local Veterans
During Annual Memorial Day Celebration – May 31

ST. LOUIS (May 10, 2021) — The Sappington-Concord Historical Society will return to St. Lucas United Church of Christ this year to host the biggest, little annual Memorial Day celebration in South County. This year’s event will be at 9 a.m., Monday, May 31, on the green at St. Lucas United Church of Christ, 11735 Denny Road, 63126. The annual family-friendly celebration is free and open to the public. Guests must observe all St. Louis County COVID-19 requirements to protect the health and safety of all attendees.

This year’s event will feature distinguished speaker Mr. Craig O’Mara, retired pilot for NASA, United Airlines and the United States Air Force Reserves. Mr. O’Mara flew part-time for NASA as a research pilot on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (“SOFIA”), a Boeing 747SP. O’Mara conducted astrophysics research on the only flying observatory in the world. In the USAF Reserves, O’Mara flew the Douglas C-9A Nightingale, a flying hospital, for 22 years. He also volunteered as a pilot for Wings of Hope for 25 years.

This year’s event will also include a ceremonial flyover by a local group of Stearman Biplane aircraft owners; a doves of peace release; and musical performances by Lauren Hoggatt, the Moolah Drum Corps and the Lindbergh High School Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, and parking will be available on the east parking lot at St. Lucas. This year’s event will not include an indoor reception or refreshments due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Wednesday, April 28, 2021—7 pm for the Virtual Quarterly Meeting via Zoom

Esley Hamilton will present “A History of Landscape Architecture in St. Louis” looking not just at gardening but at park and neighborhood design in the broader context of landscape architecture. Primarily through the efforts of Landmarks Association, St. Louisans have become more aware of our architectural heritage, but we are less familiar with the people who designed our parks and neighborhoods. This talk explores some of the highlights, and  introduces nationally famous landscape architects who have designed both public spaces and private gardens in St. Louis.

Esley Hamilton is a SCHS Board member, historian, and author. His background is in urban planning and architectural history, teaching and researching for St. Louis County Parks for 40 years. He also taught the history of landscape architecture at Washington University for a decade. Through these associations he became involved with the National Association for Olmsted Parks, the Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation, and the Cultural Landscapes Foundation.
