Past SCHS Events – 2013

Listed below are events sponsored by the Sappington-Concord Society for the year 2013. Upcoming events are listed at the top of the page in chronological order. Events that have already been held are listed in the section sub-titled Past Events – 2013. The SCHS works hard to put on the events and programs it offers to its membership and the general public. It is hoped the events are memorable for those who attended them. It is also hoped that the listing of past events gives an idea of what kind of events can be expected in the future.

SCHS Daytime Presentation at Tesson Ferry branch of the St. Louis County Library
“How Rude! The Changing Forms of Polite Behavior”  – presentation by Emily Troxell Jaycox

Bar graphic 7x1.3 + bars clip art

The daytime presentations have become popular with those who do not want to drive at night or who are otherwise committed Wednesday nights. We have a wonderful and convenient venue in the Tesson Ferry Library auditorium. The library also co-sponsors the daytime presentations with SCHS. The date is Wednesday, November 20 at 3:00 pm. The speaker is Emily Troxell Jaycox from the Missouri History Museum. Her description of her talk is as follows:

How Rude! The Changing Forms of Polite Behavior
Presented by Emily Troxell Jaycox, Missouri History Museum Librarian

“Did you know that spittoons were considered a step forward in polite behavior? Have you ever wondered about the etiquette of calling cards or dance cards? What about hats and gloves? Should Mrs. Jones refer to her husband as Mr. J.? What advice was given to newlyweds 50, 100 or 200 years ago? Discover the ever‐evolving standards of politeness, which illuminate the relations between men, women, classes and races.”

Emily Troxell Jaycox joined the Missouri History Museum library staff in 1989. Prior to that, she worked at the Newberry Library in Chicago and Lake Forest College Library. Her undergraduate degree in History is from Oberlin College and her master’s in Library Science is from the University of Chicago. While working among old books and documents, much of her workday is spent planning ways to make more of the Missouri Historical Society’s collections searchable via the Internet. Her research interests include historic maps, North America in the late 1700’s, and the history of food. She lives in South St. Louis and enjoys house tours.

Treasures Show and Tell – Note this event is past, held in 2013
Wednesday, September 18
On September 18th, I hope you all can bring one or two of your treasures to share for the
Treasures Show and Tell event. Many people enjoyed this event last year and we had requests to do it again. At this very informal event, members brought items to show by putting them on tables for all to see. As members browsed around they had a chance to see what other members had brought, talk about them and learn more about each other. We even had a mystery item or two which everyone had a chance trying to explain or figure out. It was a fun and relaxed evening and we look forward to doing it again. It is Wednesday, September 18th at 7:00 pm in the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Room. Please come and bring a treasure or two. It is a good chance to invite someone new to the SCHS also!

Bussen Quarry Tour – Note this event is past, held in 2013
Wednesday, June 19
We have an exciting bus tour to Bussen Quarry on June 19. This visit is not only of historical interest seeing a company that has been in operation for more than 100 years in our area, it is also an industry vital to our economy, as much now as ever, for the building of structures and roads. And as if to make it a theme, we will visit the Monroe County History Museum that has a large collection of transportation vehicles. Then off to a fine lunch at Gallagher’s restaurant. This is surely a tour you won’t want to miss! At Bussen Quarry we will see the quarrying process and maybe blasting, too. We will see the loading operation on the river and we will go into the underground storage areas where all kinds of businesses take advantage of the secure and climate controlled conditions in the underground. We will learn about Missouri geology, quarrying technology and equipment. The tour for Wednesday, June 19th will start at St. Lucas UCC, gathering at 8:30 am and boarding our restroom-equipped Cabello bus at 9:00. We return to St. Lucas at 3:00 pm. Our tour price includes bus fare, admissions and sumptuous lunch at the famous Gallagher’s restaurant, all for $35. Send checks to Ray Steinnerd at 4474 Gemini Drive 63126 or pay in person at the April 24 general meeting. Call Stephen Hanpeter with questions; 314-9181617

Vietnam Traveling Wall
comes to St. Louis – Note this event is past, held in 2013
June 12-16
The Vietnam traveling wall will be here at Lindbergh High School. It is a great chance to come honor, respect and remember those who have served and died for our country. Our sister Society, the Sunset Hills Historical Society is spearheading the effort, and we are supporting them with a cash contribution, as well as working in the organization, Show-Me Hero Salute. I invite all of you to attend this event literally in our “front yard” and I also invite you to become involved in planning the event, working during the event and maybe making a small cash contribution to help support it. See our Veterans Committee chair person, Jacque Stock, to learn how you can do more. Also, see the event website;

Memorial Day Ceremony – Note this event is past, held in 2013
Monday, May 27, 10:00 am
It will soon be time once again for our biggest and most solemn event of the calendar year, our Memorial Day ceremony. Last year we had good weather and our Memorial Day ceremony chairman, Bill Lowry, has ordered good weather for the program again for this year. We had a great turnout last year for the reception after the ceremony. Many ceremony attendees went up the hill to St. Lucas UCC for the reception with refreshments, air conditioning and lots of fun being gathered together. The ceremony will include patriotic and stirring vocal numbers as well as band music provided by the Lindbergh Spirit of St. Louis Marching Band. There will be buglers for taps and a number of other features that should not be revealed before hand. Please come out to be part of the event and see for yourself. Bring your own chairs and sun screen. Remember to dress for the weather. Monday, May 27 at 10:00 am. The following is the press release for the event: Sappington-Concord Historical Society

Civil War Espionage!
Note: venue change Now in cafeteria at Lindbergh High School. Park in front of Commons.
April will see the return of Marc Kollbaum to SCHS. We saw him in January when he guided us through the Powder Magazine Museum at Jefferson Barracks. Now at the Spring general meeting Marc will again bring his knowledge of military history to us, this time speaking on the cryptic topic of Civil War espionage. Marc Kollbaum, Curator and Jefferson Barracks Historian, will tell us about espionage techniques of the 1860s. Who made the best spies? What did spies do? What techniques were used to create codes? He will lead us in deciphering several encrypted messages. All are welcome, bring your friends, family and spies if you can find some! If this seems to be a replay of the January program, it is in a way. Due to circumstances beyond anyones control, Marc was not able to present at the January meeting, so he has graciously agreed to give his presentation to us in April. Also speaking briefly, Vietnam veteran Tom Ford, returns to tell us about the Vietnam traveling wall coming to St. Louis in June. Anne Arthur, Manager of the Tesson Ferry Library will also speak briefly about library services that we SCHS members can take advantage of. The Spring meeting will be on Wednesday January 23 at Lindbergh High School in the cafeteria (new venue) at 7:00 pm. Arriving 15-30 minutes early recommended..
