Listed below are events the Sappington-Concord Society held in 2012. This listing gives a sense of the kind of events that the SCHS offers regularly to its members and the general public. It should give an idea of what kind of events can be expected in the future. The SCHS works hard to put on the events and programs it offers. It is hoped the events are memorable for those who attended them, both in terms of knowledge and fellowship.

Special Daytime Presentation, “Charles A. Lindbergh; The Making of the Man”
Tesson Ferry Library
Tuesday November 27, 2:00 pm
We will have a special daytime presentation at Tesson Ferry Library especially designed for those who would prefer not to drive at night. The event will be on November 27th, a Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 pm. It will be in the auditorium at Tesson Ferry Library. Abbi Telander of the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, spoke to us in April of this year about U.S.Grant, the Family Man. She will be doing this return engagement by popular demand. Her topic will be on her other specialty, Charles A. Lindbergh, which is a man and topic close to our hearts and city. Abbi is a former employee of the Minnesota Historical Society and will focus on Lindbergh’s childhood in Minnesota and his experiences here in St. Louis that gave him the necessary skills and experiences to make his historic flight. Again, this daytime presentation is meant to accommodate people who feel more comfortable driving in daylight hours, so please come out to take advantage of this great opportunity. And as always, invite someone in your family and a friend or two. The more the merrier!
Frank Lloyd Wright House Tour

The Frank Lloyd Wright house in Ebsworth Park in Sugar Creek Valley is a beautiful example of the architect’s work in our area. Located near Dougherty Ferry Road and North Ballas Road, the house sits on a knoll above the beautiful wooded Sugar Creek Valley in Ebsworth Park, a St. Louis County park. The house can not be seen from the road, but after entering the park, the house comes into view while driving up the entrance road. Our fall tour should provide us a beautiful morning to see the site and tour the house. Reservations are required and there is an entrance fee of $10.00 for each adult. Parking is limited at the site, so we will help arrange car pools from St Lucas UCC departing the church at 9:30 am to arrive at the Wright house in time for the 10:00 am tour. You may sign up for the tour and pay for it in person at the October general meeting. Or you may reserve a spot by calling Stephen Hanpeter at 314-918-1617 or emailing him at schs.webmanager@gmail.com. However, payment needs to be made before or at the October 24th general meeting.
General Meeting

Our general meeting for October 2012 will be a double-header! Meeting in our usual venue; the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Room at Lindbergh High School, at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, October 24. we will hear two speakers. Roger Frederickson of the Missouri Veterans History Project will talk about creating oral histories of WWII and Korean War veterans. Our second speaker will be Ryan McClure who will speak about the Arch grounds project, the redevelopment of the riverfront park and its connection to the downtown mall. Ryan is the Communications Director of CityArchRiver 2015 and appropriately his talk is “City Arch River: 2015; Enhancing the Arch Experience for Everyone.” Please come out to hear about this historic landmark which is of such great importance to us in St. Louis and for the whole Midwestern United States. Treasures Show and Tell Night

Come join us at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night September 5 at Lindbergh High School in the Anne Morrow Lindbergh Room at 7:00 pm. Bring an item of sentimental or historic value to show. Please think along the lines of something you can carry easily, that would probably not be furniture or large items. Think especially of kitchen and dining items, that is, things for the table or cooking. If it were something unusual or mysterious, that would be even more fun! This is an event for sharing and fun; it is not an event for sales or appraisals. So bring something for sharing you will enjoy! Refreshments will be served. Sappington House Tour

A “Meet-at-the-Site-Tour” We will meet at the site, the Sappington House, to tour the home of Thomas Sappington, the library and the barn gift shop. Admission is three dollars. Reservations are not necessary. This tour is by special arrangement with the Sappington House and the City of Crestwood for Sappington-Concord Historical Society members and guests. General Meeting

Meramec Highlands-Past and Present James Baker will speak on the history of the large, fancy, but little known resort on the Meramec River in Kirkwood, called the Meramec Highlands. Sappington-Concord Memorial Park
The Sappington-Concord Historical Society sponsors its annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 28 at 10:00 am at Memorial Park at the intersection of Gravois, Sappington and Denny Roads, across the street from Johnny’s Market at 11555 Gravois Road Sappington, MO 63126. The featured speaker will be Rear Admiral Charles A Williams SC USN (ret). A reception follows at St. Lucas UCC Church. Other participants: Boy Scout Troop 646 and Lindbergh High School bands. Free event for all ages. Bring your family to honor the service of all veterans to our country. Bring your own chairs, too!

Bus Tour to
Cahokia Mounds
We will drive to Cahokia in the comfort of a tour bus with restroom facilities. We will tour the interpretative center and have lunch following our tour at a restaurant in the area. This is a walking tour. The cost of the bus and the lunch is $37 per person. To reserve your seat, call Stephen Hanpeter at 314-918-1617. Come see this phenomenal site of world-wide importance right in our very own back yard. There is also a new interpretative center and other new facilities.

Spring Meet-at-the-Site-Tour
White Haven historic site

The Sappington-Concord Historical Society sponsors a “meet-at-the- site” tour to White Haven, the Grant historic site. At our general meeting in April we heard about Ulysses S. Grant the family man. Come see with your own eyes Grant’s home and the interpretive museum and grounds. There is no sign up or reservations necessary. Just come at 10:00 am on Thursday morning, May24. We will meet inside the entrance to the interpretive center in the entrance hall at 10:00 am. No reservations necessary. The tour is both indoors and outdoors so dress accordingly. Civil War Display at Tesson Ferry Library
Go to the library to see the display about the Civil War in Missouri, “A State Divided.” The display of photos, drawings and artifacts from the Society archives and members was assembled and arranged by Terry Rupp, Ross Wagner and Ray Steinnerd. The display will be in the case just inside the library entrance for the whole month of March. See display case photos.

General Meeting
Ranger Bob Pollock from the US Grant Historic Site will speak about the politics before and during the Civil War. Please note! We will be meeting in the Early Childhood Center which is the new building on the Lindbergh High School campus. It is on the north side of campus, the side toward Sappington Road. It is the building with green panels. Directions: coming in at the main entrance to the campus, turn left after the guard booth. Go straight ahead. At the stop sign, continue straight ahead into the parking lot in front of the Early Childhood Center. Enter the building through the front entrance and the meeting room for us will be straight ahead.
