Win the SCHS President’s Cakeway Cupcake Prize!
What would a great city, which is often referred to as the “Gateway to the West,” call a birthday cake for the celebration of the 250 anniversary of its founding? Well, with a wry twist of humor, might it be called a “Cakeway to the West!” Indeed it might and so it is.
The year 2014 is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city of St Louis, Missouri. The non-profit, STL250, is placing remarkable monuments, called with a wry twist of humor, “Cakeways to the West,” around the St Louis Metropolitan area to commemorate the anniversary on a grand scale. The Cakeways also highlight points of interest in the history of St Louis. Seeing these miniature monuments on a daily basis for many St Louisans, keeps this special anniversary year in mind. However, the Cakeways will be in place only for a short time, that is, the duration of the anniversary year. To record these distinctive and individualized monuments for posterity, many people are seeking them out (see information on locations below) and photographing them.
The SCHS President’s Cakeway Cupcake Contest gives a slight twist to the desire to photograph the Cakeways by asking the photographers to include people in the photos with the Cakeway. That would be people the photographer knows personally and that are important in some way to the photographer, or the community. The people in the photo could also be significant in wider ways to the person and to the viewers of this website, in other words, well known or famous people.
In either case, would you want to go through the whole of the 250 anniversary year without getting yourself and those important to you involved? Certainly not, just as your remember the other big events in history, where you were and what you were doing when such and such happened, you will remember this year as a milestone. And this milestone is a pleasant celebration rather than a disaster! So get out there to create your milestones and memories.
Get yourself to your nearest Cakeway and throw down your maker in history with a commemorative photo of yourself and others important in your life. And don’t keep your photos in a shoe box or in your smart phone, share them! It’s a celebration! It’s a grand moment! It all ends in December, so act now while the weather is warm, it’s “summertime, and the livin’ is easy.”
