St Louis Regional History Organizations
St Louis Regional History Organizations was formerly named “St. Louis Regional Historical Societies.” At its Fall 2018 biannual meeting, it to change its name to “St. Louis Regional History Organizations” (StLRHO). The new name more inclusively refers to all history-related organizations which better represents the fact that there are more than just historical societies working together with StLRHO.
StLRHO includes historical societies, museums, and historic sites, among others, whether public or private. Attendance at the meetings and workshops is open to all representatives of local history groups, their leaders and officers. These leaders gather together to network, to share information with each other about their organizations, to discuss common challenges and to share strategies to help them become more effective. StLRHO looks for ways that member groups can collaborate for greater strength. In short, to work stronger together.
The area served by StLRHO includes the Missouri and Illinois counties that surround St. Louis County and City. Membership in StLRHO is open to all area history-related organizations who want to participate and to work together for the good of all.
StLRHO has in the past several years held two professional development workshops for members; a membership workshop in 2016 and a grant writing workshop in 2018. StLRHO also tries to pass on information to members about other professional development opportunities. There have been several such opportunities each of the past several years, usually through the Missouri Historical Society.
StLRHO meets twice a year for its biannual Spring and Fall meetings, usually held in April and October. The biannual meetings are hosted by the various participating groups, in turn, at venues throughout the region.
Basic membership in StLRHO brings with it a listing in the official directory. This contains a description of each organization and contact information. Each member can be further recognized as a “sponsoring member” for making a contribution of $20 annually. Monies are used to meet office and printing expenses of the StLRHO directory.
The office of St. Louis County Preservation Historian in the Department of Parks & Recreation (unfilled as of Spring 2019) was held for a number of decades by Esley Hamilton. StLRHO started in 1992 with two local historical societies meeting together. Esley became the lead organizer. The next County Historian, Danny Gonzales, brought in more professional development and joint programming efforts. He established the StLRHO Steering Committee consisting of nine members in 2017.
On the page below are listed upcoming StLRHO events and other professional development opportunities. There is also a list of past events going back several years.

Demonstrating Relevance in Today’s World
What does it mean to be relevant? What is the relationship between relevance and value? Through discussion and group interaction we will explore ways to make your institution/site more relevant to your community, examine history organizations that have cultivated a mindset of relevance, and practice using the tools of history relevance.
History organizations need to demonstrate relevance in three areas: • Value of history to society
• Value of your organization to its community
• Value of your content to each individual your organization engages
This workshop led by Tim Grove is for those who want to explore relevance on a deeper level and desire to make their site more relevant to their community and other stakeholders.
NCPH blog post about three spheres of relevance:
ncph.org/history-at-work/considering-relevance/
TIM GROVE is co-founder of the History Relevance initiative, a national movement to increase the profile of history and empower history organizations to better demonstrate their relevance. He speaks about relevance at national conferences and at the History Leadership Institute (formerly SHA) and teaches regional workshops. He was a featured speaker at Canada’s History Forum in 2017. As a public historian, he has worked at a variety of organizations, including twenty years at the Smithsonian and three years at the Missouri Historical Society (working on the Lewis and Clark: The National Bicentennial Exhibition). Invitation from Emily
Dear Community Collaborators,
Time is flying by in its usual fashion, and the next Community Collaborators lunch is right around the corner! It will be held on Thursday, September 20, at noon in the AT&T Multipurpose Room on the Missouri History Museum’s lower level. There have been some significant changes to our exhibit schedule since our last meeting, so I’ll update you on those and go over our plans for the grand reopening of the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum. We’ll also have time for all of you to discuss your projects and initiatives, so please bring any information with you that you’d like to hand out.
I want to make sure we have enough lunches for everyone, so please email me at emu@mohistory.org to let me know if you can make it. Please also let me know if you need a vegetarian meal or have any other dietary restrictions.
It’s been a whirlwind of a year so far—with so much more to come—and I’m looking forward to catching up with all of you. Hope to see you at the lunch!
Cheers,

A Day of Sharing Retreat – July 11, 2017
John Remelius, president of the Carondelet Historical Society, and Stephen Hanpeter, president of Sappington-Concord Historical Society, would like to invite others from the Regional Historical Societies to join them in a day of sharing about challenges you face as leaders of your organizations. But more than challenges, the hope is to share solutions, insights, and what works. Below are some topics that John has listed up as possible talking points. They are just suggestions. As a group, we can decide on the topics to discuss during the day based on the desires of the group.
The meeting will be at the Carondelet Historical Society on Tuesday, July 11 at 8:00 am and finish at 4:00 pm. It will be a day of sharing and learning. We will start in the morning by deciding on the topics of discussion by mutual agreement among those attending. Whoever is attending will also decide on the structure for the day.
Carondelet Historical Society, 6303 Michigan Ave, St Louis, MO 63111, USA
We will break for lunch, visiting a restaurant in the area. This will be a day for us to talk about organizational needs, concerns and solutions. We hope many of you can come join this sharing session and search for ideas to help your organization better carry out its mission.
A few more words about the focus of the day
The emphasis is on you; your thoughts and your needs right now. Sure we can plan workshops and have seminars on improving our organizations. We can read books. But what if we want to just jump in both feet first into the deep water right now today? That’s what this day is for. Talk about anything and everything. Say whatever you want. Share to your heart’s content, all in one day. Take notes on what you heard and talked about, or just be happy you could talk freely.
Consider this day a retreat
Step back for a few hours. Make time to think, discuss, listen and most of all, share. Some retreats get away from the city. This is in the city, at the beautiful Carondelet Historical Society, 6303 Michigan Ave, St Louis, MO 63111.
So we can get an estimate of attendance please RSVP to Stephen Hanpeter at schs.webmanager@gmail.com.
